There is a medieval proverb that says, “If a man’s life be lightning his voice will be thunder.” What does it mean to have a life like lightning? Lightning cannot be ignored. It’s anything but boring. It evokes wonder. To me, having a life like lightning calls me to live fully alive to the glory of God. It’s about living in wonder as a result of encountering the stunning beauty of Jesus (His lightning) and then allowing your awe-struck heart to become the greatest energizer in devotion. We need to recover the wonder of it all. We can receive this grace in devotion by cultivating interior wonder, lightning on the inside.
It is commonly held in the scientific community that the air around a single lightning bolt can reach 54,000 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the hottest natural substance on earth and fives times hotter than the surface of the sun. In order to produce the hottest-hearted disciples, we must get them around the hottest substance, the lightings of God. The place to encounter God’s lightning is at His Throne where He is seated in wonder.
“And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices.” (Rev. 4)
The Wonder Realm of Yahweh
Wonder can be defined as that which causes astonishment, surprise, admiration, and amazement. It is astonishment or marveling at something awesomely mysterious or new to one’s experience. So, wonder is a response. Specifically, wonder-filled-worship is our response when we have an encounter with Beauty. For me, Supreme Beauty is found in the heart of the One who created everything beautiful in its time. Beauty is Jesus’ idea. When we encounter Him our response is wonder-filled-worship. Wonder is our response to Beauty.
“This is from the presence of Lord Jehovah and it is a wonder in our eyes!” (Ps. 118:23)
We have access to the holiest place in existence through the holiest substance in existence, the precious blood of Jesus. Through the blood of Jesus, we come boldly to God’s throne and have our very own “Revelation 4” encounter with His majestic wonder. We can become lightning and have a thunderous voice by developing devotional intensity before the throne. There is no place in existence with more wonder and intensity than the presence of Jesus. We need to allow His lightning to flash across our dull hearts and to allow His thunder to shake us from spiritual boredom.
It is this fixated wonder that we want to steward well. I don’t believe the wonder in my heart for Jesus has to ever become dull. I want to live fascinated by Jesus. I want to walk in that fire of first-love devotion to Him, to grow in Christ-likeness, and to be found worthy to walk out God’s highest purposes for my life. I believe this is possible for any saint who will allow God to strike their hearts with His majesty as He releases lightning and thunder from His throne.
Making Lightning is about positioning the heart to encounter the majestic beauty and glory of Yahweh. It is the process of being transformed by the glory of The Lord, responding with wonder-filled-worship, becoming fully alive, and releasing that wonder to others. Yahweh makes lightning; we crumble in wonder. But we must have another look. We are wrecked by His goodness but long for more of Him. His majestic beauty strikes the heart with awe-filled wonder as we cultivate a fully awakened devotional life and then release Yahweh’s majestic glory to others. Encountering God’s presence through devotional-lightnings will not only enable us to walk in the fire of first love, but will also empower us to release a sound (a thunder) that will awaken a sleeping generation.
My path in the wonder realm of God begins with lightning, encountering the stunning beauty of Jesus, and responding with astonishment. My call was to wrap my face in the mantle of wonder. That means many things to me I’m not allowed to share. But I’m permitted to say this about that – it means to hide my face in His astonishing love and splendor. Jesus has pursued me over and over. He’s crazy about me. He has released glimpses of His glory, and it has left me awe-struck. I believe the Lord is using this Wonder Realm to produce the hottest-hearted disciples marked by His lightning.
Two Ways to Begin the Journey into Wonder:
For starters I recommend two ways to engage this realm (there is no formula here and your path may be different and probably should be. But for me, these two ways to commune with wonder specifically honor my spiritual family):
- “Come to be” in the Spirit by praying in the Spirit at all times (Eph. 6:18). Praying in the Spirit is also prayer in-step with the Spirit (prayer in-line with the Spirit). I would even say that prayer in the Spirit is a way to pray “into the Spirit” realm. Try to spend an hour a day praying in the Spirit.
Read aloud the biblical narratives of God’s throne (Revelation 4; Isaiah 6; Ezekiel 1). Reading the bible aloud helps to focus your mind and heart on the passage. Meditating on the Word means, “to chew” on the word, it needs to be in your mouth. It also makes it easier to begin to pray-read the passage (stopping at key points to pray the scriptures, ask the Lord questions, and declare praises to Jesus for who He is). Ask the Lord, “What did Ezekiel see? What did Isaiah see? What did John see?”
